After spending 100 million euros in the last 14 years on defenders, Barca can rely on own production

Spaniards are proud that with the coming of Jordi Alba, Barcelona can align after a very long time a defense made up exclusively of players trained at La Masia. Montoya (21, photo) and Alba (23 years) are the future on the flanks.

Journalists from Marca were calculated how much Catalans spent from 1997 to present, in an attempt to transfer valuable players on wingback positions. By welding torque Dani Alves – Abidal (that was probably one of the most powerful couples in the last 20 years), heads from Camp Nou have tried many variants, spending around 100 million euros for transfers.

The last right-defender that was promoted by Barcelona from La Masia was Albert Ferrer, player who evolved in blau-grana’s jersey from 1990 to 1998. As the left fullback position, things were even worse, their last product being Fernando Navarro (he played for Barcelona from 2001 to 2006, but was not a viable solution, collecting just 21 games).

If Barcelona Academy became famous throughout the world (today’s team – considered by many the best in history – is built largely of players promoted from La Masia) for players like Valdes, Pique, Puyol, Iniesta, Xavi , Busquets, Fabregas and Messi, behold now they also boast with valuable wingback.
